First Lego League - Lego Robotics
First Lego League excites students about science and technology. They are tasked to build an autonomous robot that can complete missions. They also must create an innovative solution to a real world project relating to a theme. Six elementary schools in the Granite School District participated in this program this year. All but one of these schools had never done it before. After hours of work and real world lessons in "gracious professionalism" and "coopertition", students learned that the journey is more important than the destination and that failure can lead to success. They learned the excitement of science and technology and the importance of working together. Students have brought their robots to show what they can do and explain the frustrating, yet fulfilling process it took to get the robot to do what they wanted.

iAuthor = iLearn
Apple’s iAuthor is a great tool for students to be in charge of their own learning and provides them a way to be creative about how they display information to others. This group of 4th graders from Ellis Elementary in Logan, Utah created their own ebook on the water cycle so that the rest of the class could view and learn from it on class iPads. Ask them about what made the task fun, hard, challenging, and educational. Talking to the students will help you develop your own plan based on their successes and failures as you try to integrate this new technology in your own class. Great for any Gifted and Talented class or differentiated instruction.

Succeeding in Creating an Online Community
For this student showcase, we will be looking at how to effectively utilize resources like blogs and forums to create an online community for the students to take part in. These resources are easily shared with parents and the community to really bring a creative group of individuals who are given the opportunity to learn from each other. We will be discussing how to best facilitate discussion and ask the right questions, rather than just providing all of the information to the student. The student showcase will walk you through examples of how the students are able to not only adapt, but also to excel at this online environment. There will be many student work samples that will demonstrate how they are able to post their own work and also comment and leave each other feedback, thus reaching a much larger range then even a team of teachers could. This information is all very data-driven. Self-critique and self-examination are important parts to this online community. While using blogs and other techniques, you also as an educator open up the door to learning that can go beyond your specific class you are teaching and actually be continued on past your time as the student's instructor. The student might continue to use these same resources throughout his/her life to share information and images. That ability for the students to stay connected is of vital importance as we move forward in finding the best uses of technology in the learning process!
