Running a Paperless Classroom with Google Tools

This project-based session will focus on using a variety of Google Tools to teach in a technology-based paperless classroom. We will begin by setting up a basic Google Site with a contact me form and embedded class calendars. Then, we will demonstrate how to use that site to assign and collect work in several different ways, and we will discuss the pros and cons of each method. Along with setting up the site and a workflow for assignments, we will also look at using forms to create self-correcting quizzes and easy-to-use project rubrics. We will demonstrate how to increase the power of forms and spreadsheets by using Google Apps Scripts and custom functions to automate common and useful tasks. Finally, we will discuss classroom management and procedures to ensure that the paperless classroom runs smoothly and efficiently. We will share experiences and insight that we have gained in adopting the paperless model in our classrooms and in our school. This discussion will include basic procedures for students in the classroom as well as in the cloud. It will also include some insight into what to expect when instituting a paperless classroom for the first time. Tools used will include Sites, Calendar, Drive, and Forms. We will discuss assigning and collecting work, fostering collaboration, and managing workflow in a paperless classroom. During the class, participants will create a working website from the ground up that will include all the basic elements for running a paperless classroom.
