A "GPS Toolkit" to Guide Your Social Studies Teaching (version 2013)
G = Geography P = Primary Sources S = Strategies & T = Technology/Other Tools

The Common Core curriculum provides us, as teachers, opportunities to incorporate the use of geography, primary sources, thinking historically and literacy strategies, along with technology tools, in our 4th-12th grade classrooms.

In this session you will be given ideas on how to weave geography throughout your curriculum. You will learn how to access “Primary Sources” from online sites, including the Library of Congress, with its already prepared primary source sets, and how to include them in your Social Studies class. In addition, you will be introduced to online interactive history games, web sites, and other technology tools that will engage your students in history, geography, and culture. The presenter will also share professional learning and study opportunities available for teachers that will enhance and enrich both your learning, and that of your students.

The presenter, Ruth King, is a National Council for Geographic Education Distinguished Teacher of the Year 2012, was the National Council for the Social Studies Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year 2011, the Utah Council for the Social Studies Elementary Teacher of the Year 2011, was a Colonial Williamsburg Summer Teacher Institute 2012 - Peer Facilitator, is a member of the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Mentor Advisory Group, and serves on the Alpine School District’s Teaching American History Grant Steering Committee, and as a Master Teacher.
